What is the effective range?
10 to 25 feet (3 to 7 ½ meters)
Optimal range 15 – 20 feet (4 ½ to 6 meters)
How much space is needed around the subject?
Approximately 3 feet (1 meter)
Will wind, rain or snow effect the successful deployment of the device?
We have not received any feedback yet that extreme weather has had any effect on the device or its usage. Due to the high velocity when the Kevlar cord exits the device, there is virtually no impact by wind or rain if deployed with the recommended effective range.
What agencies currently have the device?
This changes almost daily. As of March 2023, over 900 agencies have the devices in the United States, and we have devices in over 59 countries internationally.
Over 4000 officers worldwide have been trained and are certified Wrap Instructors.
What is the propellant?
Microgas generators (as used in vehicle airbag systems)
How fast is it?
Velocity of anchors and cord at initial deployment is approximately 400fps. As distance increases the velocity of the anchor/cord decreases rapidly.
What is the decibel range?
The BolaWrap 150 has about a 156db level.
What is the life of the Battery Pack?
Battery life is approximately 2-years based on normal use.
The BolaWrap 150 is programmed to recognize that the Battery Pack is low and indicates that it is time to change the Battery Pack by displaying a blinking AMBER LED Indicator. Operators will still have several deployments remaining, depending on temperature; however, when this occurs, users should contact their quartermaster/equipment supply representative and switch Battery Packs as soon as practical.
What is the warranty?
One-year manufacturer’s warranty
Extended 2-year “No Questions Asked” warranty option available for $189 per device
Is there a cassette shelf life?
The 5-year expiration for the Cassette is due to the manufacturer’s warranty for the Kevlar. Since the Cassettes are in an environmentally controlled environment at the factory, the 5-year warranty starts when the Cassette is shipped to the customer. (2-year field carry, 3 years proper storage)
Are training cassettes available?
Not at this time
What are the training requirements?
The Train the Trainer course certifies instructors to teach end-users. This course is approximately 7 hours in length and each instructor will be required to deploy 6 cassettes.
The end-user course can be between 4 to 5 hours depending upon each agency’s particular training needs. It is recommended that the end-user deploys 2 cassettes; however, WRAP suggests a total of 4 to increase their proficiency and confidence in the device on their initial training and 1 cassette every year after for recertification. If the operator deploys a cassette in the field during a call of service, if video is available, the instructor can review this deployment, provide proper feedback and this will suffice for their annual certification.
What are the anchors made of?
Metal Injection Molded Single-Piece Anchors with Included Safety Cap weight of 4grams per anchor.
The metal injection molded single-piece anchors, with included safety caps, lower the risk of piercing the skin—both for the wrapped subject and the officer removing the tether using the integrated anchor removal tool from the Cassette’s Shipping Cover.
The 7.5’ Kevlar cord has a tensile strength of 230 lbs.
What happens if the Kevlar cord and anchors accidentally strikes the neck?
Our training and deployment requirements are to avoid wrapping the area above the elbows.
Wraps above the elbows are discouraged because of the limited restraint and the risk of having an anchor strike the subject’s face or neck.
The wrap will not constrict upon contact with any part of the subject’s body, so there is no risk of choking if the wrap is displaced around the neck.
The multi-dot laser array provides for better target acquisition to avoid this.
Will the BolaWrap work on bare skin?
The BolaWrap 150 is designed to wrap clothing and not designed for bare skin, therefore there is a greater chance the wrap will not be ineffective for limiting mobility as the anchors/hooks will not engage with the skin.
If the hooks do penetrate the skin, this could increase the risk of a small penetration of the hook.
Will the BolaWrap work on a subject who is walking away?
Individuals do not need to be standing still to be wrapped. If someone is non-compliant and walking away from the officer, the BolaWrap 150 can be an effective tool to stop movement and restrict mobility.
Consider wrapping between the mid-thigh area and knees for a tighter wrap of the individual.
If a foot pursuit occurs, officers should assess and use the BolaWrap® to stop the pursuit if indicated by agency policy and the risk of secondary injury is low.
Even loose wraps tend to trip individuals or distract them while they try to untangle themselves; thus, the importance of moving into cuffing.
To allow the individual the ability to brace themselves while running, it is recommended only to target the lower wrap zone and not wrapping their arms.
Is there a potential for injury?
There is a potential for injury with any tool law enforcement carries. For that matter, a writing instrument can cause injury if used in the manner it was not designed for.
The risk of injury is decreased if used in the manner in which we train.
How do you remove the Kevlar cord & barbs once wrapped?
We recommend the cord be removed from the subject once the situation has become static. Removal can be accomplished in a variety of ways including medical shears, seatbelt cutter or using the integrated anchor removal tool from the Cassette’s Shipping Cover.
Where is the BolaWrap manufactured?
Parts for the BolaWrap 150 are sourced from all over the world, but all devices and cassettes are assembled at Wrap Technologies’ headquarters in Norton, Virginia.
What is the training cost?
The cost to attend a BolaWrap Instructor Training course is $389, inclusive of the cassettes required to deploy.
What is the “success” rate?
A tight or perfect wrap is not necessary for a deployment to be considered successful. If the BolaWrap deployment, either alone or in combination with other tool or tactics, results in getting the subject restrained without significant injury, it can be seen as successful. This is true whether you have a tight wrap, loose wrap, or no wrap at all.
Successful use of the BolaWrap occurs whenever an officer is able to place an individual into either custodial arrest or protective custody as a result of its deployment. This may occur as a result of one or a combination of the following factors:
Display of the BolaWrap or green multi-dot laser array; resulting in compliance
The sound of the BolaWrap deployment and/or the Kevlar tether or anchors contacting the individual; causing a distraction or startle response
Restraint caused by the tether and anchors after the deployment
